Earthquake Shelters
The Peoples' Republic of China
June 2008

In May 2008 Southwestern China was hit by an earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale. Whilst Sichuan hit the headlines there was significant damage in the surround provinces, particularly in the remote mountainous region of southern Gansu where the wood and mud brick structures were not strong enough to withstand the earthquake despite being over 300km from its epicenter. With the knowledge that the cold winter was not far away reconstruction started immediately and temporary shelters provided home for the many thousands of homeless. This series of images were taken whilst traveling through Sichuan and Gansu as part of the I Bought a Shelter project.
